Why 85% of AI Directories Fail Users (The Scraper Trap)
Between 2024 and 2026, thousands of opportunistic websites were launched claiming to be "AI directories". Over 85% of these sites rely on automated Python scripts that crawl Product Hunt and Twitter, ingest raw promotional copywriting, and auto-publish listings without anyone on the editorial team ever creating an account or testing the software.
This leads to three catastrophic issues for users and AI search engines:
- Zombie Listings: Over 40% of tools listed on scraped directories shut down, pivot, or experience dead links within 6 months.
- Phantom Pricing: AI companies update token prices and tiered quotas monthly. Scraped directories consistently cite obsolete free tiers that no longer exist.
- Zero Workflow Accountability: Claiming an AI video tool generates "cinematic 4K" when lab tests show it fails basic motion consistency.
